As Russian forces persist in their destructive campaign against Ukraine, Ukrainian defenders continue to resist with strength and determination. A recent failed Russian assault near the frontline town of Robotyne in Zaporizhzhia Oblast has resulted in what one Ukrainian officer called the “total defeat of the bastards.”
According to Lieutenant Alex, Russian troops launched a mechanised attack using twelve armoured vehicles and two full companies from the direction of Kopani towards Robotyne. The attempt ended in disaster. Ukrainian forces destroyed all twelve vehicles as they approached. Survivors from the wreckage who attempted to flee were reportedly “finished off” by Ukrainian special forces.
Ukrainian fighters believe this was a probing assault intended to test their defence lines. If so, the effort backfired spectacularly. The scale of destruction indicates poor planning or desperation on the part of Russian commanders.
Ukrainian drone units and tank brigades also dealt further blows to Russian military assets. The elite 414th Magyar Birds unit destroyed multiple BM21 Grad rocket launchers, including four Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) vehicles—three were reduced to scrap metal, and one was critically damaged.
Elsewhere, Ukraine’s 1st Separate Tank Brigade, the renowned Seversky Brigade, based in Honchari, Chernihiv Oblast, remains one of Kyiv’s key units. Operating recently in the Avdiivka sector, their tank crews have played a significant role in halting Russian movements by destroying fortified positions and holding territory under pressure.
The brigade, which underwent a leadership change in August 2024 when Lieutenant Colonel Oleh Mahulskyi took over from Colonel Leonid Kota, continues to lead successful operations. Its composition—armoured battalions, mechanised units, artillery, and specialised drone groups such as Pegasus, Tuman, and Bora—makes it one of Ukraine’s most dynamic fighting forces. It has also been taking steps to protect its personnel against potential chemical threats, having requested gas masks and filtration gear to counter possible chlorine-based attacks.
Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, a major explosion rocked the United States. On 16 April, a building at the Northrop Grumman Innovation Systems plant in Promontory, Utah, was destroyed in a blast. This facility produces solid rocket motors, a key component in American intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) and hypersonic missile interceptors.
The company confirmed no serious injuries, but the damage is significant. The factory has previously manufactured components for the LGM-35A Sentinel ICBM, with 659 units planned for procurement by the United States. Static engine tests for the Sentinel were recently carried out at the Promontory site.
Northrop Grumman is also involved in a joint US-Japan project to develop a long-range interceptor for hypersonic threats, where it is responsible for the solid rocket motor of the second stage. The blast raises questions about the potential disruption of key American defence projects.
In Denmark, tensions are rising around the issue of Greenland’s defence. Alex Ahrendtsen, a representative of the Danish People’s Party, proposed deploying 100 armed troops to Greenland and instituting voluntary military service for all local residents. He argued this is necessary to secure the Kingdom of Denmark and ensure Greenlanders contribute to national defence. This proposal follows a renewed interest in the Arctic from foreign powers, including controversial past comments from Donald Trump who in 2019 attempted to purchase Greenland, which Denmark rejected.
The Danish government recently warned it could cancel defence cooperation with the United States if Washington ever withdraws from NATO. Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen reaffirmed that Denmark’s relationship with the US is contingent on mutual NATO membership. The new Prime Minister of Greenland, Jens Frederik Nielsen, also stated firmly that Greenland is not for sale and never will be.
