Ukrainian soldiers have captured an African mercenary who was fighting for the Russian military. The incident took place during a failed Russian assault in one of the sectors of the frontline. The 1st Air Force Combined Rifle Brigade and the 35th Marine Brigade successfully repelled the attack, eliminating five Russian soldiers and taking one prisoner.
The captured fighter, who identified himself as being from West Africa, claimed he originally arrived in Russia to study in the city of Saratov. He later joined the Russian army while in Saratov. Ukrainian soldiers provided him with medical assistance, food, and water. In a video statement, he expressed gratitude to the Ukrainian military for sparing his life.
Reports indicate that Russia has been forcing African migrants and students to join its military, using threats of deportation to pressure them into service. According to European officials, thousands of foreign nationals, including convicts and young workers on visas, have been coerced into fighting against Ukraine. Some have managed to bribe Russian authorities to avoid conscription, while others have been left with no choice but to go to the front.
Ukraine later transferred the captured African mercenary to the relevant authorities. The use of foreign fighters highlights Russia’s struggle to replenish its forces, as its heavy losses on the battlefield continue to mount.
