Dutch Defence Minister Warns Against Weak Peace Deal for Ukraine

Dutch Defence Minister Ruben Brekelmans has urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky not to agree to any deal that would create a fragile “post war period,” where Russian aggression remains a constant threat. Speaking at the Paris Forum on Defence and Strategy, Brekelmans warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin has made it clear Ukraine is not his final target and that Europe must prepare for further attempts by Moscow to expand its influence and territory.

Brekelmans stressed that Ukraine must negotiate from a position of strength and that European nations must take responsibility for their own security. He pointed out that the United States no longer guarantees automatic support for Ukraine, making it essential for Europe to strengthen its security architecture independently. He emphasised that Europe has relied on the United States for too long, and this dependence can no longer be assumed but must now be earned. He called for urgent action, warning that there is little time left to prepare for future threats from Russia.

During his speech, Brekelmans painted a stark picture of Putin’s ambitions, describing them as a dream for the Russian leader but a nightmare for the rest of Europe. He warned that Putin’s goal is to restore a Russian empire and that European nations must make it clear that such ambitions will not be tolerated.

The Dutch minister also referenced recent statements by Donald Trump, who has repeatedly questioned the United States’ commitment to NATO allies. Brekelmans indirectly responded to Trump’s comments by highlighting the importance of NATO’s collective strength. He pointed to symbols at NATO headquarters, such as a piece of the Berlin Wall and a mangled piece of steel from the Twin Towers, as reminders of past conflicts and shared responsibility. He questioned what future relics of war might stand alongside them in the coming years, asking if they would include remnants of Ukrainian cities destroyed by Russian missiles.

Brekelmans concluded by warning that Europe is at a crossroads, with limited time to build the security structures needed to counter Russian aggression. He insisted that the continent must overcome its fears and recognise its strength, as this will be essential for ensuring long term security.
