EU Plans Full Break from Russian Energy by Mid-March

(Brussels) – EU Energy Commissioner Plans to Sever All Ties with Russia

The European Union’s new energy commissioner, Denis Jørgensen, is focused on developing a plan to sever all energy ties between the EU and Russia, with particular emphasis on gas, oil, and nuclear energy.

The newly appointed European Union Energy Commissioner, Denis Jørgensen, has identified the severing of all energy connections between the European Union and Russia as a top priority. In an interview with Politico, Jørgensen outlined his goal of crafting a plan that would ultimately eliminate the EU’s energy dependency on Russia.

He stated, “The progress we have made in reducing our energy dependence on Russia is significant,” and emphasized that further steps are needed. Jørgensen plans to introduce a “roadmap” that will outline effective tools and methods to tackle any remaining challenges in breaking these energy ties.

The strategy, according to the commissioner, will primarily focus on natural gas, oil, and nuclear energy. Jørgensen aims to have this plan ready within the first 100 days of his tenure, by mid-March 2025.

The European Union has already implemented broad bans on the maritime export of coal and oil from Russia and has drastically reduced its reliance on Russian natural gas by about two-thirds.

Earlier, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen suggested that the EU could increase its purchase of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States to avoid potential trade conflicts. Jørgensen acknowledged the critical role the U.S. has played in reducing Europe’s dependence on Russia, stating, “We could not have reduced our dependence without energy supplies from the U.S. They have been our friends, and I hope we will continue that friendship.”

Belgium, one of the largest European importers of Russian liquefied natural gas, has called for the EU to impose a ban on Russian fuel imports.
