(Kyiv) – A drone strike has reportedly targeted an industrial facility in Kazan, Russia, a city housing a key military production plant. This incident has drawn attention due to the plant’s significance in supplying the Russian military with crucial missile components.
The incident involved multiple drone incursions. Russian media and Telegram channels reported that one drone specifically struck an industrial enterprise within Kazan. Andriy Kovalenko, head of the National Security and Defense Council’s Center for Countering Disinformation, highlighted the presence of the Kazan Powder Plant in the city. This plant is a vital component of Russia’s military-industrial complex, responsible for producing explosives, rocket propellants, and other materials essential for manufacturing various missiles, including the Kalibr and Iskander. Mr. Kovalenko emphasized the plant’s importance in sustaining Russia’s ammunition production capabilities.
Tatarstan’s press service, representing the region’s head, Rustam Minnikhanov, reported a total of eight drone incursions. These included one strike on an industrial facility, one drone flying over a river, and six incidents over residential areas. There were also reports suggesting attempts to intercept the drones using machine guns.
The Russian Ministry of Defense issued a statement claiming that the drone attacks occurred in three waves originating from different directions. The Ministry asserted that its air defense systems successfully destroyed three unmanned aerial vehicles, while electronic warfare systems neutralized three others.
The incident also impacted air traffic in the region. Reports from ASTRA indicated temporary suspension of flight arrivals and departures at Kazan airport. Similar measures were implemented at Izhevsk airport, where the “Carpet” plan, a procedure for airspace closure due to security threats, was activated.
