French Mirage 2000 Fighter Jets Arrive in Ukraine

The first batch of French Mirage 2000 fighter jets has arrived in Ukraine, marking a significant development in the ongoing military support from France to Ukraine. The delivery, announced by French Minister of Defence Sebastien Lecornu, is part of the country’s commitment to aiding Ukraine in defending its airspace amid ongoing hostilities.

The French Ministry of Defence confirmed that these Mirage 2000 aircraft are the first of their kind to be sent to Ukraine, following an announcement made by President Emmanuel Macron on June 6, 2024. Lecornu shared the news on social media, noting that Ukrainian pilots, who have been receiving training in France for several months, will now operate the jets as part of the country’s efforts to secure its skies from Russian threats.

The training of Ukrainian pilots and mechanics was a crucial part of this transfer. In December 2024, reports indicated that Ukrainian personnel had completed a six-month course on the Mirage 2000-5F fighter jets. This training programme prepared them for the advanced technology and capabilities of the aircraft.

The French commitment to this transfer was reaffirmed in January 2025 by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, who confirmed that the delivery of Mirage 2000 jets would continue in the near future.

The Mirage 2000 aircraft is notable for its unique “duck” configuration, with a low-mounted triangular wing and a 58-degree sweep angle on the leading edge. The design also features air brakes on the top and bottom of each wing, which enhance the aircraft’s manoeuvrability. The use of composite materials and advanced wing mechanisation further enhances the performance and durability of the aircraft, making it a valuable addition to Ukraine’s aerial defence capabilities.
