Portugal has not ruled out the possibility of sending troops to Ukraine as part of a European peacekeeping mission. Portuguese Defence Minister Nuno Melo stated in a recent interview with Renascença radio that such a decision would depend on the terms established for the mission and the agreement between the conflicting parties. Discussions are ongoing regarding the potential composition of a European peacekeeping force in Ukraine.
Several European countries have indicated a willingness to contribute to such a mission if a formal agreement is reached. Denmark has expressed its readiness to participate, with Foreign Minister Lars Rasmussen and Defence Minister Troels Poulsen confirming their country’s support. Canada, Australia, and Ireland have also stated their interest in contributing peacekeepers. Türkiye has signalled its willingness to engage in discussions about joining the mission, viewing it as a means to promote regional stability and security.
At the end of February, the United Kingdom suggested that it could send troops and combat aircraft to Ukraine as part of a peacekeeping operation. However, the European Union maintains that Ukraine’s primary security guarantee will come from its own strong military, supported by EU training, funding, and weapons supply. A European peacekeeping mission would serve as an additional measure to strengthen security in the region.
Portugal has already committed significant military assistance to Ukraine. Defence Minister Nuno Melo announced that in 2025, the Portuguese government would allocate €226 million to support Ukraine. This funding will cover the direct supply of weapons and the purchase of additional military equipment. Portugal remains an active participant in initiatives aimed at enhancing Ukraine’s defence capabilities, including training and logistical support.
