The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin continues to ignore a United States proposal for a ceasefire that has been on the table for nearly a week. Speaking in his evening address, Zelenskyy stressed that every day the war continues, more lives are lost, and the world can now clearly see that Putin alone is prolonging the conflict.
The proposal, which calls for a complete cessation of hostilities in the air, at sea, and on the front line, could have already been implemented. Zelenskyy pointed out that even those who previously refused to accept the truth now recognise that Putin is preventing peace. Despite repeated calls from the international community, the Russian leader refuses to say yes to an unconditional ceasefire that would allow diplomatic efforts to secure lasting security and peace.
According to Zelenskyy, the only response from the Kremlin has been further delays and empty statements that avoid addressing what the world is demanding. He called for continued international pressure on Moscow, stating that Russia must be forced to recognise that its war must come to an end.
Analysts at the Institute for the Study of War believe that Putin is deliberately stalling discussions on a ceasefire to prolong the war. Although he has publicly stated his willingness to agree to a thirty day truce, he has attached conditions that raise doubts about his sincerity. Declassified United States intelligence reports have also questioned Putin’s true intentions, suggesting he has no real desire to end the war against Ukraine.
