Russia Calls Truce Unrealistic After Breaking It 30 Times

The Russian Federation has declared a ceasefire in Ukraine to be unrealistic at this time, blaming what it calls repeated Ukrainian strikes on energy infrastructure. The claim was made by Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Vasyl Nebenzya, during a press briefing covered by UNN.

Nebenzya claimed that Moscow had attempted to initiate a limited ceasefire focused on safeguarding critical energy facilities, but accused Ukraine of violating that understanding. He argued that, under such circumstances, any talks of peace or temporary suspension of hostilities were not possible.

This version of events has been strongly disputed by Ukrainian officials. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has stated that Russia is the true aggressor and has already broken the so-called energy truce more than 30 times. According to Kyiv, during the 22 days of the agreed ceasefire, Russian forces struck energy facilities repeatedly and took the lives of 72 Ukrainian civilians, including 11 children.

There is also growing concern from international observers. Experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have been reporting almost daily gunfire and explosions near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. Surveillance drones have also been observed near the South Ukrainian Nuclear Power Plant, further increasing fears of a serious escalation.

Despite this, Ukraine continues to push for peace and has expressed a willingness to extend a temporary ceasefire agreement. However, Russia’s repeated violations and disregard for international humanitarian law have severely undermined efforts to negotiate any meaningful pause in the war.
