Russia Sets Conditions for Ceasefire Talks with Ukraine

Russia is considering a temporary ceasefire in its war against Ukraine but demands progress toward a final peace agreement. Moscow has also stated that it does not oppose peacekeepers from neutral countries but firmly rejects any NATO presence.

According to Bloomberg sources, Russia signalled its readiness to discuss a ceasefire during negotiations in Saudi Arabia last month. The first sign of a positive response from President Vladimir Putin to Donald Trump’s call for a cessation of hostilities came through a proposal made in these talks. However, Russian officials insist that any halt in fighting must be accompanied by clear agreements on a long-term settlement.

Two people familiar with the discussions told Bloomberg that Russia would only agree to a ceasefire if the framework for a final peace deal is established. Moscow wants to determine which countries would take part in any peacekeeping mission in Ukraine and has ruled out NATO involvement.

Key Russian Conditions for Ceasefire Details
Ceasefire possibility Russia is open to a temporary halt in fighting
Condition for ceasefire Must be linked to progress in a final peace settlement
Peacekeepers Neutral countries like China could participate
NATO presence Completely ruled out by Moscow
Negotiations Saudi Arabia hosted discussions last month

Russia has rejected a proposal from European nations to form a “coalition of the willing” to oversee any peace deal. Instead, Moscow prefers that neutral countries like China be involved in any peacekeeping mission in Ukraine. While no formal agreement has been reached, Russia’s conditions signal its strategy of controlling the terms of the negotiation process.

Ukraine has not yet responded to these latest developments, and it remains unclear whether these conditions will lead to real progress toward ending the war.
