The Kstovo refinery in Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod region has halted operations after a drone attack on 29 January, with significant damage reported to its ethylene and propylene production unit.
A drone strike targeted the SIBUR-Kstovo refinery, located in Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod region on 29 January 2025, causing the plant to cease operations. According to the ASTRA Telegram channel, the plant switched its primary facilities to backup mode following the attack. Additionally, the refinery temporarily suspended product shipments as it assessed the extent of the damage and began necessary repairs.
The strike resulted in a fire at the ethylene and propylene production unit EP-300, which was severely impacted by the explosion. This disruption is a significant blow to the plant’s operations, and the refinery has been left to grapple with the damage caused by the attack.
Reports indicate that explosions were heard in the Kstovo area late at night on 29 January, with drones sighted in the vicinity. Initially, it was unclear whether an oil refinery was directly affected, but further confirmation came from sources within RBC-Ukraine, who stated that the strike on the Kstovo oil depot was part of an operation conducted by Ukraine’s Defence Intelligence. Four direct hits were confirmed on the oil depot, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict.
Ukraine’s Defence Intelligence has not officially commented on the operation, but the attack further exemplifies the growing use of drone strikes as a strategic military tool in the ongoing war.
