Trump May Recognise Crimea as Russian to Secure Ceasefire

The administration of United States President Donald Trump is considering recognising Crimea as Russian territory as part of a future agreement to end the war between Russia and Ukraine. According to reports from Semafor, officials within the administration have also discussed the possibility of urging the United Nations to adopt the same stance.

This potential recognition would align Washington’s position with that of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has long claimed Crimea as part of Russia despite its illegal annexation in 2014. The Trump administration’s openness to such options has not previously been reported. Trump is expected to hold a phone call with Putin on Tuesday, during which a proposed thirty day ceasefire will be discussed.

Sources indicate that no final decisions have been made, and recognising Crimea as Russian remains one of many options being considered by the Trump administration, which insists on ending the war. Trump’s press secretary has stated that the administration is moving closer to securing a peace agreement, with the president determined to reach a deal.

United States Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard has suggested that Trump’s conversation with Putin will be productive. The discussion is set to take place on 18 March, with the focus on ending hostilities in Ukraine.
