(Kyiv) – Ukraine has issued a nationwide air alert after receiving warnings of potential ballistic missile threats from Russian forces. The Ukrainian Air Force confirmed that it had detected the launch of enemy missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and took immediate action to protect its territory.
The alert came after the Ukrainian military successfully intercepted five out of five ballistic missiles and 40 out of 65 drones launched by Russia during a major attack in the early hours of December 20. According to reports from the Ukrainian Air Force, these interceptions were part of an ongoing effort to protect civilians and critical infrastructure from Russian missile strikes.
The Ukrainian Armed Forces continue to monitor the skies closely, especially after the takeoff of enemy MiG-31Ks earlier in the day, which further raised concerns about incoming attacks. These fighter jets are known to carry long-range ballistic missiles, increasing the potential for widespread destruction if left unchecked.
In total, Ukrainian air defenses played a critical role in mitigating the damage from the December 20 attack, with additional drones being destroyed in the aftermath. The Defense Forces confirmed that another 20 drones were shot down in various regions, bringing the total number of intercepted UAVs to 60. Despite these successful interceptions, the continued threat of Russian missile and drone strikes remains a significant challenge for Ukraine.
Ukraine’s air defense systems, which include a combination of advanced missile defense technologies and fighter jets, have been pivotal in safeguarding the country from the ongoing aerial assault by Russian forces. The Ukrainian government has emphasized the importance of strengthening air defenses to cope with the escalating threat posed by Russia’s long-range weapons.
Russia is continuing to launch targeted missile and drone attacks, often aimed at civilian infrastructure and critical sites across Ukraine. The Ukrainian government has repeatedly urged its allies to supply more advanced air defense systems in order to enhance its capabilities and better protect its population.
