Ukraine on Path to Becoming a ‘Humanitarian Superpower,’ UN Official Says

Ukraine’s growing role in humanitarian aid is gaining international recognition, with Deputy UN Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Tom Fletcher predicting that the country will become a “humanitarian superpower.” Speaking in an interview with Ukrinform, Fletcher highlighted the remarkable expertise Ukrainian non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have developed during Russia’s aggression. These skills, he stated, are now positioning Ukraine to become a leading provider of humanitarian assistance worldwide.

Despite ongoing war and military threats, Ukraine is actively delivering aid to countries in need. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently announced the shipment of 500 tonnes of Ukrainian wheat flour to Syria under the “Grain from Ukraine” programme, an initiative in partnership with the UN World Food Programme. This effort reflects Ukraine’s dual role as both a recipient of international support and a growing contributor to global humanitarian relief.

Fletcher pointed out that Ukrainian organisations, having faced one of the worst humanitarian crises in modern history, have developed an extensive network and operational capacity. He believes these efforts will allow Ukraine to take the lead in responding to humanitarian crises far beyond its borders. “Ukraine is poised to play an even larger role, not only as an aid recipient but also as a significant exporter of humanitarian relief,” he said.

The country’s commitment to global aid was also evident when Zelenskyy offered Ukraine’s assistance to the United States in fighting the devastating wildfires in California. The Ukrainian leader instructed the Minister of Internal Affairs and Ukrainian diplomats to prepare a deployment plan that would send at least 150 Ukrainian firefighters to assist in the rescue operations. This offer underscores Ukraine’s ability and willingness to support international disaster relief efforts, despite its ongoing struggle against Russian aggression.

Ukraine’s emergence as a global humanitarian force is an inspiring transformation from a nation at war to a country that not only fights for its survival but also extends help to others in need.
