Ukraine Terminates Postal and Electricity Agreement With Belarus

The Ukrainian government has officially terminated its long standing agreement with Belarus on cooperation in the field of communications. The agreement, which was signed in December 1992, covered the operation of electricity and postal networks as well as the transportation and delivery of postal items. The decision marks another step by Ukraine in severing ties with Belarus, which has been an ally of Russia in its ongoing aggression against Ukraine.

The termination was announced by Taras Melnychuk, a government representative in the Verkhovna Rada, through Telegram. The agreement had previously ensured the smooth functioning of communication infrastructure between the two nations. However, due to Belarus’s continued support for Russia’s military actions, Ukraine has opted to dissolve various treaties that once bound the two countries.

The move is part of a broader effort by Kyiv to reduce its dependence on Belarus, which has allowed its territory to be used by Russian forces during the invasion. Ukraine has already severed multiple economic and diplomatic agreements with Minsk in response to its role in facilitating Russian aggression.

Details of Terminated Agreement

Agreement Date Signed Key Areas Covered
Ukraine-Belarus Communications Cooperation 17 December 1992 Electricity networks, postal networks, delivery of mail

The Ukrainian government has stressed that maintaining cooperation with a country actively supporting Russian military operations is no longer viable. The ongoing termination of agreements with Belarus is part of Ukraine’s wider strategy to align itself with Western allies and eliminate any lingering ties to nations backing Russia’s invasion.

Kyiv continues to push for greater isolation of Belarus on the international stage, urging its allies to impose harsher economic and political sanctions against the regime in Minsk. Ukraine insists that until Belarus ceases its complicity in Russia’s war, any form of cooperation between the two nations is unacceptable.
