Ukraine Withdraws from Sudzha to Strengthen Border Defence

Ukraine’s defence forces have withdrawn from the town of Sudzha in Russia’s Kursk region, repositioning to stronger defensive lines closer to Ukraine’s eastern border. The withdrawal, confirmed by the General Staff of Ukraine, is part of a strategic decision to consolidate forces and counter Russian attacks in multiple sectors. The move comes as Russian troops attempt to advance, leading to at least 20 recorded clashes on 14 March alone.

According to the General Staff, Russian forces launched 232 artillery attacks and three assaults using multiple launch rocket systems in the area. Russian aviation also dropped 28 guided bombs in attempts to weaken Ukrainian positions. Despite these attacks, Ukrainian forces remain in control of key positions, using artillery, drones, and mines to halt Russian advances.

President Volodymyr Zelensky stated on 15 March that Ukraine’s strategic repositioning has forced Russian troops to divert resources, easing pressure on other parts of the front. He also acknowledged that Ukrainian defenders continue to repel constant attacks by both Russian and North Korean forces. Ukrainian troops have been successfully holding the line in the Sumy region, where Russian forces have been amassing troops in preparation for further assaults.

Footage released by Ukraine’s 95th Separate Air Assault Brigade shows intense battles between Ukrainian paratroopers and Russian forces in the Kursk region. Russian troops recently attempted to cross the Psel River using armoured personnel carriers but were repelled by Ukrainian defenders. While some areas have been abandoned due to the intense fighting, Ukrainian forces maintain control over strategic locations, including the settlement of Guevo.

The Commander in Chief of Ukraine’s Armed Forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, confirmed on 12 March that Russia is trying to shift the battlefield towards the Sumy and Kharkiv regions. Since the beginning of operations in the Kursk region, Russian forces have suffered over 54,900 casualties, including dead, wounded, and captured soldiers.

The recent Russian airstrikes on Sudzha have turned the town into a devastated battleground, further complicating any potential Russian gains. The Ukrainian military continues to adapt its strategy, ensuring that every move is calculated to inflict maximum damage on Russian forces while preserving Ukrainian lives and resources.
