Ukrainian Military Deploys Terminator Drone for Safer Remote Mining
Ukrainian forces are taking another step forward in modern battlefield tactics by deploying an advanced unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) to improve operational safety and efficiency. Soldiers of the 113th Separate Brigade of the Territorial Defense Forces have begun using the “Terminator,” a mining drone based on the Volya E platform, to conduct remote mine-laying operations.
The initiative was confirmed by the press service of the Khortytsia Operational and Strategic Grouping of Troops, highlighting the increasing role of unmanned systems in Ukraine’s ongoing resistance against Russian aggression. The Terminator is designed to carry up to eight TM 62 anti tank mines, enabling Ukrainian forces to fortify defensive positions while minimising direct exposure to enemy fire.
Military officials have emphasised that while traditional infantry units could carry out these tasks, using the drone significantly reduces risk to personnel. According to the official statement, “a single robot can replace up to four soldiers, allowing the mission to be completed without putting the lives of comrades at risk—their safety is the priority.”
The Volya E drone offers notable advantages in flexibility and mobility. With a maximum speed of 12 km per hour and a payload capacity of 150 kg, it can carry out missions efficiently without requiring large logistical support. Its compact design allows easy transportation in the back of an SUV, enhancing its deployment across various terrains.
Ukrainian forces have already employed the Volya E platform extensively. It has played a crucial role in evacuating over a hundred wounded and fallen soldiers from the battlefield. This underscores the platform’s adaptability beyond mine laying, reinforcing its value in combat and humanitarian missions.
The Volya E is not limited to mine laying operations. The Ukrainian defence industry has developed a mobile electronic warfare (EW) system using this platform. Equipped with a directional antenna, the modified Volya E can jam enemy drones at a range of 1 to 3 km, providing valuable protection for Ukrainian units during assaults, evacuations, or demining efforts. An additional dome antenna further enhances its protective capabilities.
Furthermore, the platform can be fitted with combat equipment such as a machine gun turret, making it a multi purpose battlefield asset. This versatility strengthens Ukraine’s ability to counter Russian forces, demonstrating the effectiveness of Ukrainian military innovation despite the challenges posed by the ongoing war.
