Ukrainian naval drone carriers have successfully carried out strikes on Russian occupied territory, targeting and hitting Russian air defence systems. The operation, which involved remotely piloted vehicles transporting FPV strike drones by sea, was coordinated by the Ukrainian Navy and the Security Service of Ukraine.
Volunteer and activist Serhii Sternenko shared footage of the attack, showing Ukrainian naval drones locating and striking Russian Osa AKM and Strela 10 air defence systems. The operation demonstrated the effectiveness of Ukraine’s innovative naval drone technology and the cooperation between military forces and engineers.
Targeted Russian Systems | Type | Function |
---|---|---|
Osa AKM | Surface to air missile system | Short range air defence |
Strela 10 | Mobile air defence system | Protection against low flying targets |
The video footage captured the moment Ukrainian naval drones approached the enemy coast before launching RPVs at identified Russian positions. At the end of the recording, an FPV drone was seen heading towards a vehicle believed to be a Strela 10 system. Although the image quality did not allow for definitive identification, military experts suggest the target was a Russian air defence unit.
In December, the BBC reported that the Ukrainian Navy had modified naval drone carriers to transport FPV strike drones. These remotely operated weapons were previously demonstrated in operations against Russian occupied gas platforms in the Black Sea. Following the recent strike, Sternenko shared a photo of one of the FPV drones used in the overnight attack.
