US Army Studies Effectiveness of Ukrainian Kamikaze Drones in Strikes on Russia

The United States Army has tested Ukrainian made long range kamikaze drones as part of the Artemis project, a programme focused on developing advanced strike drones. This information was reported by The War Zone, citing sources within the United States Defense Innovation Unit. While specific details about the Ukrainian companies involved remain undisclosed, it is confirmed that they are working alongside American firms Auterion and Swan, which play a key role in the project.

One of the main goals of this development is to create a drone with a high level of resistance to electronic warfare, low production costs, and an extended operational range of up to 300 kilometres. The United States Defense Innovation Unit evaluated around 165 proposals from various companies before selecting the most promising models for further development and testing. The project has now entered a new phase, in which selected drones will be refined to meet military specifications.

The final version of the Artemis drones is expected to be cost effective and adaptable, capable of operating in contested airspace without reliance on global navigation systems. These drones must also be capable of flying at high speeds, navigating at low altitudes, and carrying a variety of payloads. Their versatility will allow them to be used for reconnaissance, targeted strikes, and electronic warfare.

A notable aspect of this programme is the close collaboration between Ukrainian and American manufacturers. Previous reports from The Wall Street Journal highlighted discussions between American defence startups and Ukrainian drone producers, aiming to develop more effective drone technology for the United States military. Ukraine has gained significant expertise in drone warfare, achieving mass production despite limited resources. As a result, Ukrainian companies are now attracting international partners and investment, with growing interest from the United States Department of Defense.

Earlier, the Phoenix Ghost programme developed the Dominator strike drone, which shares some similarities with the Artemis project. The continued cooperation between the United States and Ukraine in drone technology demonstrates how Ukrainian innovation is influencing Western military strategy, particularly in the development of cost effective, long range strike capabilities.
