The Phoenix Company of the Pomsta Brigade, part of Ukraine’s State Border Guard Service, successfully destroyed seven Russian military vehicles in the Kramatorsk sector using FPV drones On 9 February 2025. This operation demonstrates the increasing effectiveness of drones in modern warfare, as they continue to play a crucial role in Ukraine’s defence efforts.
The Ukrainian drones targeted a variety of Russian military equipment, including two tanks, two infantry fighting vehicles, two armoured personnel carriers, and one BTS-4 armoured tractor. Many of the destroyed vehicles had been abandoned by Russian forces after a failed assault.
One of the most impressive drone strikes involved a moving infantry fighting vehicle and a tank, where the operator used a drop system to target the equipment accurately. This precise operation led to the destruction of the vehicles after they were hit.
The vehicles were located in the “grey zone,” an area between Ukrainian and Russian controlled territories, making it difficult for Ukrainian forces to recover the equipment. However, in some cases, there are efforts to evacuate such vehicles for use by Ukrainian units. These operations are fraught with danger, as the Russian forces are actively monitoring these zones and can open fire when any attempt is made to salvage equipment.
The Phoenix Company has been operating in the Kramatorsk sector, where they are holding off constant Russian attempts to advance. In late January 2025, a Russian assault in the same area ended in failure, with three enemy vehicles destroyed. One of the first targets destroyed by the Phoenix drones was a T-62M tank, which had already been damaged by a mine, rendering it immobile.
