(Video) Ukraine Strikes Russian Command in Volnovakha, Donetsk Oblast

Ukrainian Defence Forces have successfully carried out a precision strike on a Russian command post located in the occupied city of Volnovakha in Donetsk Oblast. According to a report from Militarnyi on 21 January, the General Staff of the Ukrainian Army confirmed that commanders of the Russian 29th Combined Arms Army were based at the targeted facility. This marks another significant blow to Russia’s military operations in the region.

Volnovakha, which has been under Russian occupation since March 2022, remains a key focal point for military activity in the area. The frontline is currently positioned around 44 kilometres away from the city. Russia’s 29th Combined Arms Army has been actively involved in the full-scale invasion of Ukraine since its onset.

Footage from CCTV, which surfaced on social media, showed the explosion on the evening of 20 January. The footage captured a large fireball and a mushroom cloud of smoke rising into the sky, providing clear visual confirmation of the strike’s success.

In addition to this strike, Ukraine also reported further successful operations, including a repeated attack on an oil depot in Liski, Voronezh Oblast, Russia, and damage to infrastructure at the Smolensk Aircraft Plant, a facility where Russian combat aircraft are built and modernised.

Russian sources acknowledged long-range drone activity in the Voronezh and Smolensk oblasts, but it is unclear whether Ukraine used drones or missiles to hit the Volnovakha-based command post. Ukrainian officials have made it clear that their systematic combat operations will continue targeting important Russian facilities, as part of efforts to pressure Russia with sanctions and disrupt its military operations.

The Ukrainian General Staff also stated that they are in the process of clarifying the exact number of Russian casualties resulting from these operations.
