Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy highlighted the vast military disparity between Russia and Europe at the World Economic Forum in Davos, urging European nations to invest more in defence spending to meet the growing threat posed by Moscow.
At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the urgent security concerns facing Europe, highlighting the alarming gap in military production between Russia and the European continent. Despite having a much weaker economy than Europe, Russia produces several times more ammunition and military equipment than all of Europe combined, Zelenskyy stated.
Zelenskyy stressed that this disparity poses a direct challenge to Europe’s security, with Russia increasingly resembling a militarised, aggressive state similar to North Korea, which disregards human life while expanding its nuclear capabilities. He pointed out that Russia’s strategic alliances with countries like North Korea and Iran further highlight the threat it poses not only to Ukraine but to Europe and the US.
The Ukrainian president called for an urgent increase in defence spending across Europe, insisting that countries must be prepared to invest whatever amount is necessary to secure the continent’s safety. He argued that European nations must prioritise defence spending, even if it means reducing allocations for areas like healthcare or pensions, which have been traditionally prioritised.
Zelenskyy also noted that Russia’s military strength, with over 1.3 million troops, far outmatches Europe’s combined forces, with Ukraine contributing over 800,000 troops and France around 200,000. The president concluded by calling for a unified European security and defence policy, warning that neglecting this issue could lead to devastating consequences for the region’s future.
